A walking tour of Tivat was an unexpected highlight of our Montenegro trip. Nearby Kotor and Budva tend to be more popular due to their traditional buildings and old town charm. But this means fewer tourists stop by Tivat which makes it quieter and in our opinion, a bit more authentic than neighbouring destinations.
In this article – we share a self-guided walking tour of Tivat that takes in some of its most captivating attractions.
Nestled along the stunning Bay of Kotor in Montenegro lies the charming town of Tivat. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours in the Adriatic, Tivat boasts a unique blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and maritime allure. From serene parks and pebble beaches, to vibrant waterfronts and historic landmarks, this walk encapsulates the essence of this underrated gem on the Montenegrin coast.
Walking Tour of Tivat
This Tivat walk takes 1-3 hours depending on your pace and how long you spend at each location…
1. Waikiki Beach
- Begin your walk at Waikiki Beach at the northern end of the town.
- Stroll along the pebbles, stop for a swim in the inviting azure waters, or rest and take in the stunning bay views.
- Walk east along the Šetalište Seljanovo, the road which runs alongside the waters edge (taking care as there isn’t a pedestrian pathway at all times to separate you from the vehicles on the road, but it’s pretty quiet and the traffic doesn’t drive fast).

2. Marina
- You’ll soon arrive at Tivat’s marina, where you can take in the sights of boats and yachts along with the Bay of Kotor backdrop.
- As you continue along the palm-fringed promenade, keep an eye out for the pretty buildings on the left side of the road such as the Dom Vojske Banquet Hall and Catholic Church just beside it.
- Turn left up Blaža Jovanovića and then right at the main road, Jadranska Magistrala. Take the second right and you’ll see the entrance to Porto Montenegro at the end of this road.
Top Tip – At the time of writing, there was building work going on here so we couldn’t walk along the water’s edge to Porto Montenegro. However, it looked like they were planning a pathway to link the marina and port, so you may be able to cut through (and not have to walk the long way round like we did).

3. Porto Montenegro
- Head straight towards the water and you’ll arrive at the glamorous Porto Montenegro, with its luxurious yachts, high-end boutiques, and waterfront dining.
- Stop for a coffee or ice-cream by the dock where you can take in views of the mega yachts.
- If you like your maritime attractions, then detour to the Tivat Submarine and Naval Heritage Collection which are located nearby.
- Continue along the waterside, following a road called Arsenalska, and you’ll see a large park on your left. Turn left along Istarska and head to the park entrance.

4. Veliki Gradski Park
- Explore the shade and serenity of Tivat’s Veliki Gradski (aka Large Town) Park, a tree-lined green space in the town centre.
- Stroll through the park’s well-maintained pathways, relax on the benches, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
- Exit via the same entrance you came in and cross to the other side of the road. Head right and then immediately left along Njegoševa. Culture Square is the first right.

5. Culture Square
- Although more of a street than a traditional square, this bustling area hosts cultural events and offers a chance to soak in local life.
- Stop at a cafe for lunch, visit one of the museums or small art galleries, or admire the clock tower.
- At the end of the street turn left and you’ll find yourself at the Pine Promenade.
6. Pine Promenade
- Stroll along the pine-fringed promenade and take in the panoramic views of the bay.
- Stop at the end (known as the ‘Kompas’) for a break on one of the many benches or chill at the tiny beach with the locals.
- If you look across the water towards the south, you can glimpse the Kompleks Bizanti area with its abandoned buildings.
- From the Kompas you can head back into town along ‘21 Novembra’ and end the walk here. If you want to take a taxi back to your accommodation, then they usually wait outside the VOLI supermarket on this road.
- Or you can continue strolling along the waterside if you want to extend the walk.

Where To Stay In Tivat
When we visited Tivat, we stayed at the newly opened Casa Montenegro Residence. The hotel is located just outside the town, around 10 minutes drive or taxi ride away. Being set up on a hill, it has stunning views of sunset over the bay. Learn more about the hotel and our stay in this review of the Casa Montenegro Residence.
