We spent a week exploring the Bay of Kotor and its beaches in July 2023. The coastline in this area is something really special, so if you get the chance to visit you won’t be disappointed. The azure colour of the waters set against the mountainous backdrop makes these beaches a bit different to your typical mediterranean settings. 

The Best Beaches in Kotor

Kotor is known for its stunning coastline along the Bay of Kotor. There are several secluded beaches and serene coves where the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea meet the rugged coastline. Relax in the sun, take a refreshing dip, and soak up the tranquillity of this peaceful gem.

While Kotor itself doesn’t have traditional sandy beaches, there are three pebble beaches that you can enjoy. They all benefit from amazing views across the bay with awe-inspiring mountains in the background. Even if you’ve only got one day in Kotor, you should definitely visit its beaches (along with the old town). But which one?

Well, the best beaches in Kotor are (the aptly named) Kotor Beach, Parking Beach Club, and Kotor Natural Beach. Here’s what makes them special…

Kotor Beach 

Located in the heart of Kotor, this is the largest of the three beaches and offers a peaceful escape within the town. With the majestic backdrop of the mountains and the bay, Kotor Beach provides a tranquil setting for visitors seeking relaxation. Its calm waters make it ideal for swimming and soaking in the picturesque surroundings.

Parking Beach Club

Located near Kotor’s Old Town, Parking Beach Club is a small pebble beach offering clear waters and picturesque views. The beach is actually tucked at the end of a large open car park, hence the name. Its proximity to the Old Town makes it a convenient choice for tourists looking to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Top tip – you can hire kayaks from Parking Beach Club and explore the Bay of Kotor by paddling along its coastline.

Kotor Natural Beach

Tucked away at the southern end of the town, Kotor Natural Beach offers a secluded retreat for beach enthusiasts. Surrounded by lush greenery, this peaceful pebble beach provides a serene atmosphere for sunbathing and swimming. Its unspoiled natural beauty makes it a hidden gem within Kotor that’s quieter than the other two beaches.

Other Great Beaches Near Kotor

If you’re willing to travel a little further, there are some pretty spectacular beaches near Kotor (some with sand rather than pebbles). Within 15-30 minutes drive you’ll find a range of other beaches that have more amenities like sunbeds and a bigger choice of restaurants. They make perfect side trips from Kotor since you can pop over for a few hours or make a full day excursion out of them.

Orahovac Beach 

Orahovac is a charming village with a lovely beach known for its crystal-clear waters and a mix of pebbles and sand. The beach is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a serene atmosphere. There are beachside cafes and restaurants where visitors can unwind and enjoy local cuisine. It’s a pretty 15-min drive along the coastline from Kotor.

Waikiki Beach

Located in Tivat, Waikiki Beach is a popular spot that’s easily accessible from Kotor. This sandy beach, named after its Hawaiian counterpart, offers a lively atmosphere with beach clubs, water sports, and beachfront restaurants. It’s a great option for travellers looking for a vibrant beach experience just 20-mins drive from Kotor.

Plavi Horizonti Beach 

Located in the nearby town of Radovici, Plavi Horizonti is a sandy beach with shallow waters, making it family-friendly. The beach is well-maintained and visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. It also has beach bars and restaurants, offering a range of amenities for a fun beach day. Plavi Horizonti Beach is a 25-min drive from Kotor.

Jaz Beach 

Although a bit further from Kotor (located near Budva), Jaz Beach is one of the longest sandy beaches on the Montenegrin coast. The beach is popular for water sports activities and has beachfront bars and restaurants. It’s a 30-min drive from Kotor (and an ideal day trip from Tivat too as it’s the same distance).
